Six and a half

Last week on Thursday the 14th seemed like any other day.  Ben was off to work, the kids were eating breakfast, the baby was smearing bananas in her hair.  Then Blake suddenly asked "When is my half birthday?".  I looked at the calendar and suddenly realized it was today!  He was so excited to be 6-1/2 and then a slight panic occurred when we realized he was going to celebrate his birthday at school today.  Summer birthday kids celebrate their half birthdays since they aren't in School in July.  We quickly ran upstairs and chose a book for him to share "Chicken Big" (Thanks to Great Aunt Kathy and Grand Uncle Arn), a favorite we have had for a while.  We managed to still make it to school on time and his teacher even emailed me telling me that Blake had read the book himself to his class and did a great job!  I was feeling pretty good about the fact that we pulled this off at the last minute.  Then around noon the phone rang.

It was the nurse at Tremont, Blake fell off a half dome climbing type thing on the playground and hurt his wrist.  She wasn't sure if it was broken or not and wanted to know if I could come get him.  I raced to school with Madeline and thankfully they brought him out to the car for me.  I had no idea if it was broken either so we decided to get Dr. Daddy on the phone.  He was in his office so luckily we could just drive over there and he could take a look at it.  Ben thought he needed an x-ray so he took him across the street to the OSU Emergency room.  Thankfully his office is across the street from the ER and he wasn't seeing patients on Thursday or I would have been in a much bigger mess of a situation!  4 hours later they came home with a splint and soft cast.  His wrist was broken and he would need to see the orthopedic doctor next week.  We have been doing some home schooling while we wait for his appointment tomorrow.  It has been a long couple of days but he has been so brave through all this and has a great attitude.  We are all looking forward to the hard cast so we don't have to worry as much about him falling on it and he can finally go back to school.  He seems to forget that he has a broken wrist and still runs around with Claire playing ninjas and sliding on his knees!  I think they should have put him in a body cast to stop him from moving...haha

Luckily he has been able to do some school work on a tablet.  I think he is a little too happy about the amount of screen time he has had lately...haha.

He can still write since he hurt his left arm so he decided to make a card for the hero (third grader) who helped him up when he fell on the playground.  He had an assignment for MLK day to show kindness or peace to another person, this was perfect!  We delivered the card to her today it was too cute!

When I picked Claire up from school the day it happened she was very concerned for Blake and wanted to make him a card.  I told her how to spell the words but she wrote it all herself!

Sleeping was a little challenging but he is getting used to it I think.
A day we will all never forget for sure!
Speedy recovery little guy!

  1. Wow, what a day for all of you! Blake looks like he's taking it pretty well . . . very brave of him! And Claire's card is very special. Thanks for the update, Caroline.
